Rio Tinto Operations Centre

Rio Tinto were looking to refurbish the Perth Operations Centre Office Buildings OB1 and OB2 to deliver an agile workplace that aligned with the recently completed Central Park office headquarters, while retaining the uniqueness of the Operations Centre.

Looking to define time, cost and scope parameters for the project, Rio Tinto Group Property (RTGP) ran a tender for Project Management services that called for feasibility options, each with varied quality, time and cost outcomes. We partnered with Hassell to provide the feasibility study that outlined multiple refurbishment scope of work options, enabling RTGP to select a customised project solution that aligned with their objectives and worked within their constraints.

The challenge

The Operations Centre is a 24/7 live operational environment with the most rigorous HSE and construction noise management requirements. Our team rose to the very vocal challenge that “it was not possible to complete a full demolition and refurbishment of the amenities within the Control Room”. In addition to the site and operational challenges, as typical of partial refurbishment projects our team encountered various requests for scope creep and latent site conditions.

Our solution

The complex nature of the project called for a sophisticated procurement and delivery model. Our team had to ensure the refurbishment works were completed with no impact to the Rio Tinto Operations Centre and Control Room staff or operations.

Through extensive stakeholder engagement, value management and robust reporting, the refurbishment project was completed on time and on budget.
